PCC praises Stour Valley Men’s Shed for strengthening community connections

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Suffolk has praised the work of Stour Valley Men’s Shed, highlighting the important role community groups play in supporting people, reducing isolation and strengthening the social fabric of the county.

Tim Passmore recently visited the Stour Valley Men’s Shed to mark the re-opening of the charity’s newly refurbished premises in Liston, near Long Melford.

The Stour Valley Men’s Shed provides a welcoming social space where men can come together, share practical skills as well as build friendships and support one another.

Its work can be valuable for people experiencing isolation or going through difficult periods in their lives.

Mr Passmore said: “The work of the group gives people a sense of purpose, friendship and support, particularly those who may have been through some difficult times.

“I’m really pleased to see military veterans involved, as well as younger men and those who may be experiencing mental health difficulties.

“This kind of community support is so important.

“When people become isolated or get into difficulty it can have much wider
consequences, including placing additional demands on public services such as policing.

“Stour Valley Men’s Shed is a fantastic example of a community coming together to support itself.

“Groups like this make a real contribution to the social fabric of Suffolk.”
Paul, one of the Shed’s members, spoke about the support he had received from others in the group during a difficult time.

He said: “I had some bad news, but there were people here who helped me simply by talking to me.

“All of them are brilliant and will help anyone.”

Dom Hoare, Operations Manager at the Stour Valley Men’s Shed said: “Our members have transformed this social room into a place where they can go in and enjoy company before heading off to a workshop.

“We mainly do woodworking and soon we will have a wellness area where we will do home growing.

“We also make things to sell to raise money which is put back into the pot and also attend fates to raise money and awareness about what we do as well as to encourage members to join.”

The Stour Valley Men’s Shed is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am to 2pm.

A short film about the group’s work can be viewed on the PCC’s You Tube channel.
