Victims’ Code

The Victims’ Code, introduced in April 2021, is part of the Government’s plan to make the criminal justice system fairer and easier to use by putting victims first.

What does the Code do?

The Code explains the services victims of crime should receive from criminal justice organisations in England and Wales—such as the police and courts. It sets out the minimum level of support you can expect, whether or not you report the crime. Some organisations may offer extra help, and you can choose services that meet your individual needs.

Who is a ‘victim’?

A victim is anyone who has suffered harm—physical, mental, emotional, or financial—because of a crime. It also includes close relatives of someone who died as a result of a crime.
