Key national priorities for policing

National priorities

In May 2021, a new law was introduced called the Elected Local Policing Bodies (Specified Information) (Amendment) Order 2021.

The Elected Local Policing Bodies (Specified Information) (Amendment) Order 2021

This law requires Police and Crime Commissioners to publish:

It also includes a statement on how the police are helping to improve these priorities.

The key national policing priorities are:

  • Reduce murder and other homicides
  • Reduce serious violence
  • Disrupt drugs supply and county lines
  • Reduce neighbourhood crime
  • Tackle cyber crime
  • Improve satisfaction among victims – with a particular focus on victims of domestic abuse.

Performance against national policing priorities:

Suffolk Constabulary report quarterly on their performance against the national crime and policing measures.

Reporting in relation to complaints

The Elected Local Policing Bodies (Specified Information) (Amendment) Order 2021 requires the PCC to publish the following in relation to complaints handled by Suffolk Constabulary:

Quarterly complaints data in relation to Suffolk Constabulary published on the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) website

Annual complaint statistics for England and Wales published on the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) website

The PCC must also publish:

  • How they have made sure the Chief Constable is held accountable for handling police complaints.
  • Their own assessment of how well they have carried out their responsibilities.
